Established in 1965, it occupies a former cotton mill built in 1785 by Sir Richard Arkwright, a pioneer of the Industrial Revolution . The distillery harnesses water from the River Teith, not only for whisky production but also to generate hydroelectric power, making it self-sufficient in electricity .
Deanston is known for its traditional production methods, including long fermentation times and the use of an open-topped mash tun, contributing to its distinctive waxy character. The distillery produces un-chill filtered whiskies with natural color, bottled at 46.3% ABV .
